Is the new residual chlorine sensor off track just after calibration? Please keep the key notes!

·Official source

Have you ever encountered this annoying problem?

During the use of a newly purchased residual chlorine sensor, whether it is an imported brand or a domestic brand, after the newly installed residual chlorine sensor is calibrated, there is an obvious deviation in the data within just one or two days or a few days?

In fact, it is not that the sensor is "unreliable", but that it has stepped on a key misunderstanding in the use of the new residual chlorine sensor and ignored the key precautions for the initial use of the residual chlorine sensor! Today, I will explain the reasons and solutions behind it clearly at once to help you avoid detours.

Residual chlorine sensors are amperometric sensors, and most amperometric sensors have high requirements on the surface condition of the working electrode. During use, the surface of its working electrode will gradually become passivated and contaminated, causing the sensitivity of the sensor to gradually decrease.

The working electrode surface of a newly activated residual chlorine sensor is usually very clean and bright. The initial passivation and contamination are more significant and have a more obvious impact on the measurement. With the passage of time, after the passivation and contamination of the electrode reaches a stable state, its passivation and contamination speed will be significantly slowed down, and the impact on the measured value will also be reduced.

Therefore, there is an "initial operation instability period" for new residual chlorine sensors. If the newly installed residual chlorine sensor is calibrated immediately, subsequent changes in electrode status will lead to short-term data deviations.

  • Preliminary calibration timing: After the new sensor is connected to water and power, it is recommended to run stably for 24 hours before performing the first calibration to avoid the initial stage of drastic changes in electrode status;

  • Accurate calibration enhancement: In order to ensure measurement accuracy, it is recommended to perform a second calibration after 1 week of continuous operation. At this time, the electrode status has stabilized and the calibration results are more reliable;

  • Follow-up calibration planning: The follow-up calibration cycle can be flexibly adjusted according to the actual scenario. The core reference factors include: on-site water quality conditions, monitoring data accuracy requirements, industry-related specifications and the company's internal working system.

In response to different water quality environments and operation and maintenance needs, YuanGan Technology has launched three series of residual chlorine sensors: membrane-free constant voltage digital residual chlorine sensors, membrane-coated digital residual chlorine sensors, and self-cleaning digital residual chlorine sensors. Based on on-site experience summarization and user demand adaptability design, it can effectively reduce initial stability risks. It also covers the online monitoring needs of drinking water, swimming pool water, pipe network terminal water, medical wastewater and other multiple scenarios, providing you with diversified residual chlorine online monitoring solutions.
